At it's current copy rate, it will probably take about 2.5 - 3 hours to copy my 800GB of data. I installed SyncBackFree and am running it now to copy my entire D: drive to my E: drive. So I decided to try tg550's method of using SyncBackFree to mirror my data drive once a day instead of in realtime. And as another user said (paraphrasing) "It does require another level of knowledge to troubleshoot Storage Spaces problems". "Parity Storage Space write error, but which drive is causing the problem". Other users have had problems unique to Storage Spaces which they had to ask for help on forums to troubleshoot.

After some tense times trying to read his remaining good drives, he finally tried going back to a previous version of Windows before the update and then he was able to read the drives and make a backup. One fellow had problems reading his remaining good drives after one drive failed and there was an update to his Windows. TROUBLESHOOTING PROBLEMS IN STORAGE SPACES: From one youtube video I learned that Windows does not use its "Disk Management" module to interface with the storage drives, but instead uses the "Storage Spaces" module to do that.

It appears to be a great solution for folks who have many storage drives, but it does appear to use a Windows 10 proprietary system to set up the drives. I use Acronis in file backup mode for my storage space drives.Īfter doing more research on the Windows 10 "Storage Spaces" solution, I think it may not be for me after all.

I don't thing Macrium Reflect free edition supports incremental backups.

I'm investigating it now and very importantly how to backup and restore Storage Spaces should it become infected or otherwise corrupt. The Win10 "Storage Spaces" that Nikman20 suggested looks like it may be exactly what I'm looking for, as a real-time mirror solution. Maybe doing a daily mirror like you're doing instead of a real-time mirror. I have been investigating SyncBackFree as a possible solution. I'm assuming that the OP is aware of the pros and cons and the mirror is not the only backup, if not you should research why a mirrored drive may or may not be a good thing. If both drives fail or for some reason I mirror a corrupted disk or a virus wipes me out, I have offsite backups, and backups on external drives in a fire safe. I can instantly switch data drives and continue my work. When I introduce a new 2TB drive and sync 2TB it takes a couple hours but after that it's really fast because it just scans for new files that have been added, changed, or deleted.Īnd before anyone starts to lecture me, I am fully aware of the pros and lots of cons of doing an exact mirror but the mirror is not my main backup, it's just right there in case one drive fails. The first sync could take a while if you're mirroring a large amount of data. In my case, SyncBack runs daily at a time I'm not likely to be using the computer, although, I have been at the computer working when it's running and it doesn't slow down. I have two internal drives, one drive is what I use to for all my data, the second drive is an exact mirror of the first drive. I do exactly that but I use a highly rated, been around a long time, free program called SyncBack. It may help folks who store their data on the C: drive in the folders mentioned. My C: SSD only holds Win10, and installed programs. I only store all of my data on my D: HDD. Since I don't store any of my "data" on the C: drive in the folders mentioned, it appears that Win10's File History won't work for me. If you have files or folders elsewhere that you want backed up, you can add them to one of these folders."
